Multiple Violations


The academic honesty violation reporting and appeals process changes when it involves a student who already has one or more violations on their record. The full process for such cases is outlined below.

Process for Reporting and Appealing an Additional Academic Honesty Violation

1Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardContacts the Student via email and registered mail to indicate: a) receipt of an additional violation, b)  the student is required to appear before the Academic Honesty Board for a hearing, and c) the consequences for failing to attend the hearing
2Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardSchedules the date, time and location of a hearing, and informs the student, instructor (s) and Academic Honesty Board Members within thirty working days of contacting the student regarding the subsequent violation.
3Student and Instructor(s)Submit all background documentation, explanations and any new documentation to be included in the Board’s packets at least ten days prior to the hearing.
4Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardProvides copies of all materials to the student, Academic Honesty Board and instructors.
5Academic Honesty Board, Student, Instructor(s), Secretary to the AHBConducts and attends hearing.  Hearing consists of student’s explanation, clarification from instructor(s), questions from Academic Honesty Board and final statements from the student and instructor(s). *The student’s attendance is mandatory.  If the student does not attend, the Academic Honesty Board will still meet to determine an appropriate sanction. *If the instructors are unable to attend, the Chair/Director may appear instead.  *If the instructor chooses not to attend, all evidence in the original violations will be considered as their statement(s), but should be aware that not attending is likely to affect the nature of the discussion and final outcome.
6Academic Honesty BoardDiscusses the case and determines the appropriate sanction(s) commensurate with the severity of all current and prior offenses, as well as deadlines for any additional sanctions.
7Academic Honesty BoardComposes decision letter with detailed findings, decision and deadlines for any sanctions.
8Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardSends the decision letter via email and registered mail to the student.
9Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardSends copies to the Registrar’s Office, instructors and Academic Honesty Board
10Student or InstructorMay appeal to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs within five working days of the notification date of the decision of the AHB.  The appeal must include relevant documentation attached to the email and be sent to provost.office@wwu.edu and AcademicHonestyBoard@wwu.edu
11Provost and VP for Academic AffairsMakes final determination on the appeal of the decision of the Academic Honesty Board
12Provost and VP for Academic AffairsComposes decision letter within fifteen working days of submission of the appeal.  *There is no further appeal possible as the Provost makes the final decision. The student shall comply with the final determination or be subject to further sanctions as described below.
13Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardSends Provost’s Decision letter via email and registered mail to the student.
14Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardSends copies to the Registrar’s Office, instructors and Academic Honesty Board
15StudentComplies with all sanctions within specified deadlines.  Failure to do so could result in charges under Students Rights and Responsibilities Code, including registration holds, suspensions or expulsion.
16Secretary to the Academic Honesty BoardMonitors timely completion of sanctions by working closely with the student.  Notifies Associate Dean of Student Life if the student fails to meet deadlines.
